Garbage / Recycling / Yard Waste
The Village contracts with Flood Brothers Disposal/Recycling Inc. for garbage, recycling, and yard waste disposal. Their telephone number is 773-626-5800. The Village’s assigned pick-up day is Tuesday, and the fee is $21 per month. This service is billed on your bimonthly water bill. If you fail to make your water bill payment, your garbage service will be terminated and will not be restored unless full payment is made and a $30 restoration fee will be applied.
Green Carts with Black Lids
The garbage cart (black lid) is picked up by Flood Brothers every Tuesday. This cart is to be used for garbage only - no yard waste or recyclables. It must be placed at curb. The carts shall not be placed upon Village streets or sidewalks or any Village property for pickup prior to 6 p.m. on the evening before assigned pickup day, and all such aforementioned cart shall be removed and placed back upon private property by 6 p.m. the day of the pickup assignment.
Plastic Bags Within Cart
Important! Please be sure all garbage is placed in garbage is placed in garbage bags before you put it in your cart. This helps reduce odor and keeps material from blowing out of the cart when it gets emptied. Placing your garbage in bags also helps maintain the cleanliness of the cart.
Holiday Services
When a holiday falls on or before your regularly scheduled pickup day, your trash will be picked up one day later (Wednesday), for that week only. The only holidays this applies to are:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Free Christmas Tree Pickup
Flood Brothers will provide a special collection for Christmas trees during the first two (2) weeks of January free of charge. Please remove all ornamentation, tinsel, or garland before placing your tree at the curb for pickup on your regular collection day.
Bulk Items and White Goods
Refuse collection will include one (1) bulk item (i.e. discarded furniture). Any special requests of items weighing more than 50 lbs. will not be collected and will require the resident to contact Flood Brothers to arrange for proper collection.
Flood Brothers will provide collections services for white good items (i.e. appliances). Examples shall include; refrigerators, dish washers, water heaters, washers, dryers, etc. Residents will be asked to call Flood Brothers at (773-626-5800) 24 hours prior to collection day to schedule the pickup.
Green Carts with Yellow Lid
The yellow lid cart is for recycling only and will be picked up every week on Tuesday. Additional carts are available for those residents that would be interested; rental fee would be applied. Recycling materials will be collected at an unlimited process. Flood Brothers will allow recycling materials to be commingled (i.e. plastic, glass, metal and paper products mixed together). There is no limit to the number of recycling bins or to the quantity of recyclables that a household may place at the curb for collection. Residents have the right to set out recycling bin that clearly marked for recycling collections and do not exceed 35 gallons or 50 lbs. Flood Brothers will collect from all the recycling bins that have been placed at the curb for collections. A recycling guide can be found on Flood Brothers website.
Electronics Recycling
The U.S Environmental Protection Agency states electronic waste is not the fastest growing segment of our nation’s waste. Electronic waste from computers to TV’s contain toxic materials such as lead, chromium, cadmium, mercury, nickel, zinc and other potentially harmful chemicals. Upon request, for an additional charge, Flood Brothers can arrange a pick-up of approved electronics on your regular collection day.
Flood Brothers will offer once per year E-Waster Recycling collection for approved electronics. A dumpster will be placed at the Senior Center located on May 10th to May 16th 2021 for South Chicago Heights residents only. No businesses are permitted. State Ban
The state of Illinois electronic waste landfill ban is now a state law. Under this state law, electronic waste cannot be collected with household refuse/waste.
E-Waste items banned from the landfill include:
Batteries, MP3 Players, Cable receivers, Laptop computers, Computer mice, Notebook computers, Compact Fluorescent Light-bulbs, Printers, Computer monitors, Recorders, Desktop computers, Digital cable box, DVD Players, DVR’s, Fax machines, Keyboards, scanners, Small-scale servers, Televisions, and Video Consoles.
Green Cart with Brown Lid
The brown lid carts are collected from April 1st and ending November 30th on Tuesdays the same day garbage and recycling are collected.
Yard Waste Items
Brown lid containers must be used for such items as:
- Garden Clippings
- Branches
- Grass Clippings
- Landscape Vegetation
- Leaves
- Twigs
All yard waste shall be placed in the Flood Brothers issued cart or the blue yard waste cart you own. If you have any additional items, they must be in a waterproof plastic or metal container with a tight cover, or a biodegradable Kraft bag, of a size no larger than 35 gallons and not exceeding 50 lbs. No other garbage is allowed in the these container.
Additional Yard Waste
There shall be no limit on the number of yard waste containers placed out for collection by a given household. Flood Brothers will accept and collect all bundles of brush or limbs, providing the bundles do not exceed a weight of fifty (50) pounds per bundle, are not more than four (4) feet long, are not more than two (2) feet in diameter, do not contain limbs greater than three (3) inches in diameter and are tied with a material the is accepted at the compost site.
